A space for conducting functions like marriages parties etc in the middle of Cochin city
The Udyan Convention centre has been designed as a cost-effective space for 1000 siting and 250 dining and scalable. The highly residential neighbourhood and a site with water logging issues posed as challenge for this project which was hence conceived as light weight translucent blocks and gardens
Designed as spaces without walls which could seamlessly integrate with landscape eventually mean scaling of space. Landscape became an integral part of design leading to the idea of semi enclosed pavilions (Main hall and the dining area) within a garden.
Form shaped to make open space sync with scale of the enclosed space. The orientation and the form based on solar study blocked unwanted sun. Conceived as non air- conditioned space but equipped to add later if required.
An inexpensive synthetic fabric, waterproof and breathable was introduced which imparted a translucency to the mass giving it the lightness and required scale at the same time. It glows up like a huge lantern and provides a warm ambience to the space in between during night.
Opaque service block with vertical garden connected the hall with dining, formed a backdrop for functions, and blocked noise for the neighbourhood.
Steel framed structure, fabrics, fibre cement boards, insulated aluminium roofing sheets were used for the main blocks & hollow terracotta block, RCC for service block.
